Pethany P. Chen [A SENSE OF GLAMOROUS SERENITY]

Working as a designer, operating the camera is an ordinary
task for Pethany, however, her photos are nothing but
ordinary. Starting shooting at age 18 before entering
the design school, she documented her immigrations and
journeys from different corners of the world. The “Land”
series draws a vibrant verve of our mother nature other
than just the impressively gorgeous. In the “American
Life” series, she undertakes some neglected and unexpected
subjects, translating them in a polished way. The “Window”
series directs towards existential questions about modernism.
It comes natural to admire her works from an artistic
point of view. Her accomplished style is not just a caption
from a unique angle but also an aesthetic accent embedded
in the image. The photos reveal a sincere story about
herself. This is her way to pay tribute to all living
things whether it is a celebration or a mourning.

Chen's show incorporates the magnificent shots she's taken
on her worldwide travels, images far removed from typical
tourist snaps. Instead of photographing the Golden Gate
Bridge or the view from Coit Tower, for example, Chen
finds unexpected and unexpectedly beautiful views of parking
lots and trashcans. Similarly, her Las Vegas work is more
likely to contain slouching, weary slot jockeys than vivid
neon, and her landscapes, often taken out of car windows,
depict the desolate yet stunning vistas most people drive
past without a second glance.
